San Arialdo é il nome di una piccola cappella che si trova a Velate, una frazione di Varese. Si é presentata a noi come una aula scolastica un tempo usata per la preparazione catechistica, all’interno di un contesto parrocchiale.

San Arialdo is the name of a small chapel located in Velate, a small community in Varese. It was presented to us as a lecture room in the parish house used by the children to prepare the communion.

La stanza, modesta e semplice nella forma, spontanea negli arredi, (inondata però da un’intensa luce naturale), é stata utilizzata negli ultimi anni come spazio di incontro e di preghiera da un piccolo gruppo di fedeli. Tra questi, una persona attenta e sensibile alle esigenze della comunità ne ha chiesto al nostro studio un progetto di riqualificazione.

The room, modest and simple in its shape, spontaneous in its furniture, though flooded by an intense natural light, has been used in the previous years as a space where a small group of believers gathered to pray. Among them a careful and sensible person residing in the community, addressed our studio to do a requalification project.

Il fascino del luogo é stato chiaro da subito così il nostro primo atteggiamento é stato quello di ascolto e di rispetto con l’obiettivo di mantenere la memoria storica e la spontaneità del luogo.

The appeal of the place was immediately obvious so our first approach was to listen respectfully with the aim of maintaining the historic memory and the spontaneity of the place.

Il progetto ha cercato di cogliere l’essenza dello spazio, riordinandolo e ponendo in risalto la qualità della luce proveniente dalla parete sud completamente finestrata. Si è scelto di realizzare ampie ante scorrevoli rivestite in tessuto bianco per modulare i raggi solari durante le diverse ore del giorno, creando un’eterea navata in direzione dell’altare.

The project’s aim has been to understand the spirit of the space, reorganizing it and emphasizing the quality of the light coming from the southern wall which is completely windowed. The choice was to realize some wide frames upholstered by white textile in order to regulate the sunbeams during the various hours of the day creating a celestial nave in the direction of the alter.

Gli arredi sacri sono stati ridisegnati conservando solo le panche originarie che con la loro forma “canonica” e il loro colore scuro sembrano chiedere di rimanere legate alla pavimentazione esistente.

The holy furnitures have been redesigned conserving only the original benches with their canonical shape and their dark color which seem to request remaining fastened to the existing floor.

Una croce lignea, realizzata dall’artista Giorgio Vicentini, è posta sulla parete dietro l’altare. Nella tensione e vibrazione della sua forma, appare come una mirabile sintesi degli onesti e primitivi auspici che la croce simboleggia.

A wooden cross, created by the artist Giorgio Vicentini, is placed on the wall behind the alter. In the tension and vibration of its shape it appears as an admirable summary of the honest and original auspices which the cross symbolize.
